Meet Daniel Cohen
Daniel Cohen is a recent graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied psychology and political science. Following his study abroad at Hebrew University in Jerusalem junior year, Daniel got very involved in non-profit causes and Israel programming, and currently works as the Midwest Regional Coordinator with Hasbara Fellowships, where he works closely with active Jewish college students.
Daniel is a big Cubs/Bears/Bulls fan, and is loving the city life that Chicago has to offer. He is excited to develop his venture with PresenTense and provide opportunities for children in the Chicagoland area.
Chess Buddies is an afterschool, extra-curricular chess program primarily geared towards children with special needs, but open to all. Students from first grade through high school will have a chance to get involved in learning the game and meeting friends. For some, this will be a volunteer opportunity – a place to donate time while connecting with peers with special needs. For others, Chess Buddies will be a second home – a place to develop critical thinking skills, be treated as an equal, and flourish in a friendly, fun atmosphere.
Chess Buddies has a huge target demographic. The Chicago Public School System – the third largest public school district in the country – has over 400,00 students, and thousands will be diagnosed with special needs. Additionally, the Keshet program – a natural partner for Chess Buddies – runs programs for thousands of kids with special needs in the Chicagoland area.
