Dinner Around the Table is dedicated to bringing Jewish families back to the dinner table by teaching kitchen literacy, fostering Jewish engagement, and feeding hungry families.
Dinner Around the Table offers cooking classes for families with children ages 4-15 in your home, at your school, and at your synagogue. Classes are hands-on, seasonally appropriate, and beginner-friendly. The class will last about two to three hours and will covera how to make a soup or salad, an entrée and a side, and a healthy snack or dessert. At the end of the classes, families will be able to eat, relax, and enjoy the meal they have prepared. Families will also receive a recipe booklet and a Cooking Explorers kit to take home. Classes will be offered at cost with a proportion earmarked to covering the cost for a family that cannot otherwise afford to engage in Jewish communal activities or family programming.
After participating in Dinner Around the Table, families will start thinking about the food they are eating and begin to feel comfortable working in the kitchen together. Jewish families will have a greater appreciation of the Jewish imperative to eat well and eat together. With a mastery of a few basic dishes, participating families will feel more kitchen literate and less intimidated by the equipment, grocery list, and recipes before them. Finally, families who paid for the classes will have the satisfaction of knowing that a family who could not afford the class is receiving the same skill set, while the lower-income families taking the class will go home with new tools to help them eat well and a sense of satisfaction from being able to participate in the community.
